At Physical Therapy Centers of Georgia we have proven it is never too late to begin a Fall Prevention program. We have helped our patients reduce their fall risk regardless of their age or level of function. Balance is not limited to normal range of motion and strength throughout the core and lower extremities.
Good balance is achieved through learning the fundamental concept of Center of Gravity within one’s Base of Support. Strategies are established to develop an awareness of loss of balance, and then, an appropriate reaction in order to recover. Reaction time allows us to quickly make adjustments to our bodies which are imperative to prevent falls.
Our program holistically targets range of motion, strength, balance, coordination of motion and reaction time. Even small changes can result in large improvement in function. Functional activities are incorporated to enhance ease of motion and address our primary concern of personal safety throughout daily life. These activities include transferring from sit to stand, be it from an armless chair, the car, bed, couch or toilet, negotiating objects whether going over or around them, transitioning from surfaces, inclines, stairs, uneven surfaces, or simply bending over to pick up a dropped object. Vestibular-Ocular Reflex training is utilized in more severe cases.
If loss of sensation is present from an underlying condition, treatment will include Anodyne Therapy, as described in the Neuropathy section. Therapy would not be complete without incorporating the use of our state of the art technology Eccentron, Juvent (multi-impact platform) and AlterG to enhance function and endurance.
